Latino USA spoke with Sam Cannon about the deaths of six workers at Prospect Valley Dairy in Colorado and the question of who should be held responsible when farmworkers are injured or killed on the job. On August 20, 2025, the six men died in the underground pump room of the dairy’s manure management system from acute exposure to hydrogen sulfide. Among them were a father and his two sons, the youngest of whom was 17 years old. Safety advocates say the deaths were tragic but entirely avoidable, and some have described the incident as the deadliest in recent Colorado agricultural history.
